The Art & Heritage of Silver Murti Craftsmanship — From Wax to Radiance
Exploring the ancient lost-wax casting technique and 38 years of Arihant's mastery in creating museum-quality silver idols

At Arihant Jewellers, the creation of a silver murti begins not with metal, but with vision. Our artisans — hereditary craftsmen trained across decades — first create a design inspired by classical proportions documented in the Shilpa Shastra, the ancient Sanskrit treatise governing sacred iconography. Every line of the design carries spiritual intention: the exact angle of Ganesha's trunk, the precise mudra (hand gesture) of Lakshmi, the divine proportions believed to amplify the deity's presence.
Once the design is approved, our artisans hand-carve a model in wax — a material so malleable that it allows for extraordinary detail. A single wax model for a complex murti like Ram Darbar or Durga can take weeks to perfect. The wax captures every texture: the folds of garments, the ornamental jewelry, the delicate lotus flowers in Lakshmi's hands, the fierce yet compassionate expression on Durga's face.
The wax model is then enclosed in a ceramic shell, built up in successive layers. Once the shell is complete, it is heated in a kiln. The wax melts away entirely — hence the name 'lost-wax casting' — leaving behind a perfect cavity in the ceramic. Molten 999 BIS hallmarked silver is then poured into this cavity at precisely controlled temperatures. The silver cools and solidifies, capturing every minute detail of the original wax design.
When the ceramic shell is carefully broken away, the raw silver murti emerges. What follows is a months-long process of finishing: polishing to bring out the silver's luminosity, hand-chasing to refine details, and in many cases, enameling and gold inlay work. Each step requires the practiced eye and skilled hand of our artisans. A single mirror-polish finish on a large murti can take an entire week of careful buffing.
The result is not merely a beautiful object. The lost-wax casting process creates a unique piece — each murti has subtle variations that make it irreproduceable. In many ways, our silver murtis are closer to sculpture than to manufactured goods. They carry the spiritual intention, artistic vision, and countless hours of human devotion that went into their creation.
This is why a silver murti from Arihant is not just an idol. It is an heirloom. Many families proudly display these pieces in their home shrine, knowing that the murti will outlive them — that their own prayers and offerings are being absorbed into the silver, building layers of spiritual resonance across generations.
Whether you choose a 2D hollow murti for grace and delicacy, or a 3D solid piece for presence and weight, you are receiving an artwork created with the same techniques that master silversmiths have employed for centuries. The 38-year heritage of Arihant Jewellers ensures that this ancient craftsmanship is preserved, honored, and made available to devotees across the world.
