How to Care for Your Silver Murti

A practical guide to maintaining the purity and lustre of your sacred silver idol at home

How to Care for Your Silver Murti

A silver murti is an investment for generations. Proper care ensures that its lustre, sacred energy, and craftsmanship remain pristine for decades. The primary enemies of silver are tarnish-causing sulphur compounds in the air — easily managed with simple daily practices.

For daily care, gently dust your murti with a soft, lint-free microfibre cloth. Avoid touching the murti with bare hands frequently, as the salts and oils in skin accelerate tarnishing. When performing abhishek, use a soft cloth after each ritual to dry the surface completely.

For weekly care, use a professional silver polishing cloth (not paste or liquid polish for ornate murtis, as these can get trapped in carved details). Wipe gently in the direction of the sculpted lines. If your murti has an antique or oxidised finish, polishing cloth should be used sparingly — the dark patina in recessed areas is intentional and sacred.

For deep cleaning once a month, a mild solution of warm water and a tiny drop of pH-neutral soap applied with a soft toothbrush can gently clean hard-to-reach areas. Rinse immediately with clean water and dry completely. Never use commercial silver dips on sculpted murtis.

Storage matters too. When not in regular puja use, wrap in acid-free tissue or cotton cloth and store in an airtight box. Anti-tarnish strips placed inside the box work excellently. Avoid rubber bands, newspapers, and wool, which accelerate tarnishing.
